So, for all those women out there who are losing hope, every passing year, there’s only one thing I can say, “don’t lose it.” The decline in fertility over the course of a woman’s 30s is overrated. While I was trying, I also read a journal that suggested, “A woman’s chance of pregnancy was 20 percent each month at age 30, dwindling to 5 percent by age 40.” But, trust me, the reason why I’m putting it all out here is for you to know that if I could conceive at 44 and have a healthy baby at 45, then you can do it too.

1. Record menstrual cycle frequency

Keep close tabs of your menstrual cycle. Monitor whether the two consecutive cycles are exactly 30-31 days first day apart (as in – the first day of your periods tend to come the same number of days apart every month?), if yes- it’s a regular cycle. That maybe good news. However, if our periods may be irregular, as in lengths vary from month to month, then you must track it. This will help you find your exact ovulation date.

2. Monitor ovulation

The ovulation date is when your ovaries will release an egg. This happens on a monthly basis.  According to a study, a woman’s egg is meant to stay fertile for 12 to 24 hours after it is released. A man’s sperm can survive in a woman’s body for up to five days. Women with regular cycles ovulate anywhere between 11th to 16th days from the first day of her last periods. Also, a lot of women say that they experience certain symptoms on their ovulation day. e.g. body temperature is a bit high, and there are mood swings. One other way to self-assess your ovulation date is by checking your cervical mucus. It is slippery, almost thread-like. All thanks to luteinizing hormone, whose levels are super high during ovulation.

3. Make the most of the ‘fertile window’

The “fertile window” = 5 days prior to ovulation and that very day.

I have also believed that the old wives’ tales about conception, especially related to the position influence a couple’s chances of having a baby, e.g. a woman lying on her back for a certain amount of time after intercourse increase the odds of conceiving. 

4. Aim for a healthy body weight

If you are overweight and trying to conceive, then remember one thing, it won’t help. Women with abnormal BMIs and weight issues have 2x times reduced chances to get pregnant.

Excess production of estrogen is seen in women with weight on the higher side of the spectrum. Excessive estrogen interferes with ovulation. Therefore, eat healthy and shed a few kilos to increase your probability of natural conception.

5. Take a prenatal vitamin

A prenatal vitamin is as important for pregnant women as-is for those who are trying to get pregnant. Please consult your gynecologist before getting started on this.

6. Take a break from a strenuous workout 

A lot of studies and my own gynecologist revealed that menstrual disturbances and impacted ovulation are inter-related. is often seen commonly in women who exercise heavily, and a lot of times these women need to cut back on their workouts if they want to become pregnant, Pavone told Live Science. 

7. Say no to smoking and drinking

Nicotine and carbon monoxide found in cigarettes can be blamed for the delay in pregnancy. These chemicals are found to result in the loss rate of a woman’s eggs. Well, a study suggests that, smoking ages a woman’s ovaries and results in poor quality eggs. Passive smoking is no good either. Alcohol also has similar effects.

It’s safest for a woman to avoid alcohol when she is hoping to become pregnant. A woman should also stop consuming alcohol if she stops using birth control because she wants to get pregnant.
