While it is a great idea to recognize and sometimes reward our parents (and ourselves) every day for the responsibilities we continue to fulfill. Earmarking a particular day to celebrate moms and dads is a great idea in times when time is a rare luxury.
What is Father’s Day?
Father’s Day is probably an occasion to celebrate the unsung heroes of our lives – who toil day and night to be the providers. Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating male parenting. While it is unfair to comment on who does more between mother and father for a child, it is true that the larger chunk of the worry that is keeping the household running falls on the fathers. But the contribution of a father should go beyond just monetary and material.
Father’s Day – History:
The first time that a “Father’s Day” was held was on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, in December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving behind almost a thousand fatherless children. Clayton requested the pastor Robert Thomas Webb to honor all those fathers.
