Bhai Dooj (also known as Bhaiya Dooj), an Indian festival celebrated by Hindus over the world falls on the day after Diwali. “Bhai/Bhaiya” means brother and “Dooj” means the second day. Since, this festival is celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of the Indian lunar month, hence the use of word “Dooj”. It is also one of the most important festivals celebrated in Nepal. As per the ritual, the sister performs an aarti-tilak ceremony, by applying red tika (vermilion) on her brother’s forehead and prays to God for his long and happy life. The same brother blesses her sister in return and gifts her on the occasion of Bhaiya Dooj. Such a beautiful way of wishing good for your sibling, isn’t it? Does this sound similar to Raksha Bandhan? Both seem similar but Raksha Bandhan is different from Bhai Dooj in several aspects.
