In the winter season, babies generally suffer from stuffy noses, excessive sneezing (especially caused by the weather change). Stepping in from the outdoor cold or stepping out from the well-heated indoors often also causes nasal congestion and wheezing. How does nasal congestion really happen?

Well, what actually happens is that exposure to cold air (of the low temperature) attacks the mucus transport system of the body, thereby leading to an increase in mucus production. What also happens when the cold air is inhaled through the nose is that the delicate nasal tissues and the lining swells up, which thereby leads to nasal congestion. So, as a parent, although we can’t control the weather change, certain home remedies and interventions can be arranged to ensure our kid’s health remains tip-top.

The most important thing to do during winters is to regularly (and religiously) clean nose of newborn. Newborns or infants usually get extremely cranky if their nose is blocked. So, how to clean the nose of a newborn baby, infant or toddler who doesn’t know how to blow out excessive mucus accumulated in the nose?

3 Tips on how to clean nose of newborn and inside nose area:

1. Put saline nasal spray

Brat H’s paediatrician recommends saline nasal spray for nose cleaning. It is actually safe to use with babies, infants, and toddlers. The exact way how I do it is: Lay the baby down on his back, gently tilt his head back (no point forcing because babies get cranky if you force them to do so). Then spray 2 drops of saline spray in each nostril. It is perfectly OK if your baby sneezes some out.

The deal is that some of it have definitely gone inside his nasal passage. Chances are that some of the sprays will come out of the nose because our little ones are impatient and hate the feeling of something/anything going inside their nose!! So, just wipe it away with a tissue. Check with your children doctor on which particular nasal spray to purchase and how frequently should you be doing this. The exact position for the application can also be explained by him (in the case of newborns).

2. Application of a nasal aspirator or a nose cleaner

So, this is a super hit in our case. It works fabulously after the bath or when the nose is a bit moist. How to use it? Lay the baby down on his back. Squeeze the bulb to get all of the air out, and, while still squeezing, gently insert the tip into the baby’s nostril. Then release the pressure, take it out, and squeeze the mucus out of the bulb onto a tissue. Repeat in the other nostril.  Make sure to clean the aspirator/cleaner thoroughly before and after each use.

Warning: It is advised to be sure not to stick the tip of the applicator too far up and inside. Don’t do this in excess and be gentle when applying the aspirator or a cleaner. If you are harsh, it can damage the lining of the nose and cause bleeding.

3. Wipe Gently

It is recommended that you now gently wipe around each nostril with a clean washcloth to clear all the mucus that has come out on the upper lip area.

Disclaimer: Kindly check with your children doctor before following any of these tips for your baby’s nose cleaning procedure. At times, a particular saline nasal spray may not be suitable for a baby or the nostrils are tiny enough to not be able to accommodate even the tip of an aspirator or nasal cleaner.
